Dear Friends,

We are halfway into summer! Still plenty of time to organize your American Summer Block Party! I’m here to answer any questions, brainstorm ideas, and help you make it happen. Join me today at 12:00pm-12:30pm by clicking here.

Are you new to Block Party USA? Welcome! You are in good company with so many other humans prioritizing relationships and connection, and who are ready for action!  You may find past newsletters helpful and hopefully inspiring!

If you are part of a town, nonprofit, organization, church, etc, we have some new tools for you to bring block parties back into the consciousness of the people you serve here. Please remember that you’re not organizing a block party, but inspiring the community you serve to organize block parties in their neighborhoods.

One of the main reasons I started the block party movement and founded Block Party USA was to foster opportunities for free play for kids (vs. their overscheduled, expensive, parent-taxi reality). The truth is that knowing your neighbors is KEY to sane parenting. It builds the village that we all say we need to raise our children, and it’s what’s missing. Parents are burnt out, kids aren’t okay, and we desperately need to course-correct!

I’ve learned and seen over and over that building that network of support is critical for a resilient family—impacting both the resilience of the kids and the parents! There are four key ways that knowing your neighbors contributes to our well-being and strengthens resilience:

  1. Neighborhood free play (unstructured, child-led)

  2. Opportunities to find jobs

  3. Other trusted adults in kids' lives

  4. Network of support for parental well-being

And if you want another way to hear more about supporting your kids or communities with children, join me with Let Grow on July 29th at 7pm ET. You can register here.

I’ll be joining Let Grow’s Lenore Skenazy and Holly Moscatiello of The Balance Project for a conversation on The Lost Art of Hanging Out. We’re going to talk about friendship, trust, community, and how parents can create more opportunities to connect in real life.

We have the opportunity to be the one to make change. Will you join us?
